Required high school reading irritates me. We wonder why kids don’t like to read while forcing upon them The Scarlet Letter.

This one… is way above any high school student.

Yes, it’s short. Yes, it’s exciting.

And, yes, I admit, I loved Poe when I was in high school.

But. The war inside the narrator’s mind. The I’ll prove to you I’m not mad. Is too much for high school. I don’t mean they can’t handle it. I mean they can’t understand it. It is above their comprehension level.

It was above mine back then.
