I’m underwhelmed.
Each chapter in Part I was titled with the day of the trip, so for the first hundred plus pages, I was anxious to get to day twenty-nine.
The lead up story wasn’t for me. And then, the grizzly attack was… disappointing.
Can I say that?
Oh yeah… I forgot… I can say whatever I want.
I expected life-threatening wounds. Messenger was beat up for sure, but it could have been soooo much worse.
Then, I looked up the survival rate of a grizzly attack. It’s surprisingly high. Way higher than I thought it was.
So I made it through more than half of this book, uninterested in the canoe trip, let down by the bear fight, and not intrigued enough to read about the trip back home.
Therefore, DNF.
I know he survived. He wrote the book. And I saw pictures of him standing up with his trip mates a few days after the excursion.
I’m gonna have to read Endurance again. It’s the only thing in its realm.
P.S. I did love the quotes before each chapter.
