When I read Around the World in Eighty Days, I read it all.
I mean the back cover. The intros. The prologues. The authors notes.
Well, that particular version was of the Oxfords World Classics edition, and an essay began the story.
This… God forsaken essay… told me how the story ended.
And for that reason, I don’t read cover to cover anymore. It has ruined that part of books for me forever.
Curse them.
Anyway, this book full of Poe’s short stories has pictures in it. Drawings that represent the story at hand.
Maximum of one. Usually none.
Well, the publishers of this collection, back in 1941, thought it would be a good idea to put the pictures in the middle of the story.
And these PICTURES! GIVE AWAY THE ENDING!
It has happened twice now.
Assholes.
